Transportation Committee
The Transportation Committee has been formed as a focus group on issues related to transportation in and around our neighborhood. Our primary focus is getting the road improvements project began by the county in the late 1980s completed. Other topics we'll address include the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, nearby condo/townhouse projects (their impact on our roads and traffic), pedestrian safety, parking, and related issues within and bordering Jefferson Manor.
The committee will meet primarily on an ad-hoc basis, as new issues and public forums are scheduled and/or transportation issues arise. Meetings to address any transportation issues may be proposed at any time, by any member of the committee or Jefferson Manor resident. The committee may also coordinate additional meetings or workshops to provide education to the community on transportation issues and processes, and facilitate neighborhood discussion.
If you would like to join the Transportation Committee, contact transportation@JeffersonManor.org.
The Transportation Committee was instrumental in having the County set aside funding to repave Fort Drive. This project should be in full-swing by 2007. The committee is also working on getting the County to commit to repaving the remaining portions of our neighborhood, including: Williamsburg, Monticello, and parts of Edgehill.
Through Trucks Prohibited, one-way, stop signs...
Having observed traffic violations in our neighborhood, the Transportation Committee is investigating whether our
roads are properly labeled by law.
Sidewalks
Many of our neighborhood sidewalks are in need of repair... or complete replacement. Take this opportunity to “make some noise” about our sidewalks. The Walkway Maintenance Request Form goes directly to Fairfax County, and the County forwards them to VDOT. According to Fairfax County, VDOT is responsible for our sidewalks; however, ultimately our neighborhood improvement project is the County’s responsibility. Fill out the form at:
www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/utilities/walkrpt_frm.htm or call the Fairfax County Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division at 703-934-2800 (TTY 711) to file a complaint.
The Huntington Station Shopping Center is in the first stages of redevelopment. Along with the redeveopment of the shopping center and the adjacent Jefferson Garden Apartments, AJ Dwoskin and Associates would also like to see some major changes to N. Kings Highway that they believe would also be attractive and beneficial to their businesses and the surrounding neighborhood residents. For example, the MetroZone proposal would reduce the speed limit on N. Kings Highway from 35 MPH to 25 MPH; would put a raised, grassy median in the road to slow traffic and provide pedestrians with a place to stand while trying to cross the street; would add parallel parking to the southwestern side of N. Kings Highway as a way to slow traffic and to entice drivers to stop at the local retail shop; etc. For more information, read the MetroZone proposal on the Huntington Station Redevelopment page.
The Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Area is a seven and a half mile corridor beginning in Maryland and connecting to Virginia by a bridge over the Potomac River. The Project consists of the replacement of the existing Woodrow Wilson Bridge and the upgrading of four interchanges to ease traffic congestion within the Project Area. The 495/Telegraph Road intersection is at the far West end of the project corridor; this intersection effects traffic around Jefferson Manor.
