TransportationPublic TransportationRailThe Jefferson Manor neighborhood benefits from the convenience of a Metrorail station in close proximity. The Huntington Metro Station is the southern-most stop on the Yellow Line, which connects eastern parts of Fairfax County, the City of Alexandria, and Arlington County (including Reagan National Airport) with Downtown Washington, DC. The ride from the Huntington Station to the Gallery Place/Chinatown Station in the heart of Washington normally takes less than 25 minutes. The ride from Huntington to Reagan National Airport is approximately 10 minutes. The base fare for the Metrorail system is $1.35, although fares increase based on time of day and distance traveled to a maximum of $3.90 for a trip to the other side of the metropolitan area during rush hour. Trains leave the Huntington Station about every 12 minutes during off-peak periods and about every 6 minutes during peak periods (weekdays from 5–9:30 AM and 3–7 PM). The Metrorail system begins operation around 5 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends. It closes around midnight on Sunday–Thursday nights but stays running until around 3 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. The Metrorail system map can be found at the website of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) along with timetables and an interactive trip planner that also includes Metrobus and suburban bus systems. BusJefferson Manor itself is served by the Fairfax Connector bus system and the Huntington Metro Station is also a stop on a few Metrobus routes, including the 9A which travels to the Pentagon, and the "REX" bus, an express route that connects the Kings Street Metro Station and Fort Belvoir via Richmond Highway (U.S. Route 1). The standard fare for Metrobuses is $1.25. Presenting a rail-to-bus transfer slip that can be obtained from dispensers at the beginning of a trip in the Metrorail system results in a discounted fare of $0.35. See WMATA.com for bus timetables and system maps. Fairfax Connector buses 151, 152, 161, and 162 travel along North Kings Highway with a terminus at the south entrance of the Huntington Metro Station. These bus routes extend along South Kings Highway and Richmond Highway into the southern-most sections of Fairfax County. Fairfax Connector buses leaving the north entrance of the Huntington Metro station proceed along routes that reach the Springfield and Kingstowne areas to the west and the Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon areas to the east and south. Schedules and maps for these routes and other Fairfax Connector buses can be found in the Fairfax Connector section of the Fairfax County web site. The standard fare for Fairfax Connector buses is $1.00, with a discounted fare of $0.35 with a rail-to-bus transfer. Metrobus, Fairfax Connector, and DASH (City of Alexandria) bus systems give paper transfers upon request to riders that allow a rider to transfer to another bus route or systems free of additional charge within a set period of time (normally around 2 hours for Metrobus-issued transfers and around 4 hours for the suburban systems). Both Fairfax Connector and DASH plan to install "SmartTrip" card systems by the end of 2006 that should allow for discounted rail-to-bus and bus-to-bus transfers without paper transfer slips. Automobile TravelRoad NetworkJefferson Manor is situated near some of the primary roadway arteries of the Washington metropolitan area, many of which are currently under construction in one form or another. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge reconstruction project currently underway will have the most impact on Jefferson Manor commuters and on the neighborhood itself, as it includes substantial changes to the Richmond Highway (U.S. Route 1) and Telegraph Road interchanges along the Capital Beltway (I-495/I-95). Information about the status of this project and any resulting delays that are expected can be found at www.wilsonbridge.com. Updates on road conditions, along with real-time traffic reports are made available by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Taxi ServiceThe Jefferson Manor neighborhood is served by several taxicab companies. Taxicab fares in both Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria are based on a meter system. This differs from taxis based in the District of Columbia where a zone system is used. Contact information for area taxi companies can be found at www.commuterpage.com/taxi.htm (scroll down for Fairfax County companies), along with information on taxi service to area airports.
